Anyway, White has 8.Nf5 to be considered.

Analyse position

What to play?

If 8...Bxf5 9.exf5 Ne5 10.Be2 and White looks ahead.

Analyse position

I found 7 games here with 8.Nf5.

Next move Total Games White wins Draws Black wins
Bxf5 5 4 W 1 B
h5 4 2 W 2 B
Ne5 1 1 W

Yes it is

The game in question well worth looking at, doctorork's annotation is 4176865

Classical From gambit is not 7 e4 but 7 d4 for white

Froms Gambit runs like the folllowing:
1.f4 e5 2.fxe5 d6 3.exd6 Bxd6 4.Nf3 g5 5.g3 g4 6.Nh4 Ne7 7.e4 Ng6

Analyse position

Paul Georgiou plays classically with Nxg6 and then plays Bg2 with the idea of immediately stopping the naughty Rxh2 tactics,[/quote]

Looks to me like after 8.Nxg6 hxg6 9.Bg2, black plays 9...Rxh2! anyway.

This is correct. White should refrain from the immediate Bg2, first playing d4 with the idea Qd3 to stop antics against g3 - then play Bg2. This may be what K meant.

I won a game as a teenager that began 1.f4 e5 2.fxe5 d6 3.exd6 Bxd6 4.Nf3 g5 5.g3 g4 6.Nh4 Ne7 7.Bg2 Ng6 8.Nxg6 hxg6 9.O-O Rxh2! 10.Kxh2 Qh4+ 11.Kg1 Bxg3 and white has to return the rook.

This might all be nonsense. I am so rusty. I'm currently taking a sabbattical from serious chess, and only playing the odd game on this site!

Pleased to meet you, Inconnux After [[1.f4 e5 2.fxe5 d6 Black should respond to 3.Nf3 with 3...dxe5, when White has 4.e4 (or 4.Nxe5 Bd6 5.Nf3 is just From's Gambit Accepted with an extra tempo for each side) 4...Bc5 which is a standard King's Gambit Declined in which white has nothing to speak of. White cannot now take the e5 pawn 5.Nxe5?? Qh4+ 6.g3 Qxe4+ 7.Qe2 Qxh1 8.Ng6+ Be6 9.Nxh8 Nc6]] followed by ...0-0-0 with a winning game for Black.

Of course Black could also respond to [[1.f4 with 1...c5, the Sicilian Bird. White gets nothing out of the opening, e.g. 2.e4?! d5!]] is known to be fine for Black. Also, see "Blackcrowman Plays Sicilian Birdman" Game 5184164 in which Black refrains from playing the d-pawn to d5. In another game, From's Gambit, blackcrowman played his own theoretical novelty, resulting in a draw in a position previously thought to be better for Black. I don't have that game number handy.

There was a 15-player Bird thematic Tournament #111165 with a number of interesting games. After these 28 games and others, I walk away concluding that 1.f4 offers white just equality, not more. But! I would not play 1...d5 since it gives white the kind of dark square control game he wants - especially if black also plays ...c5, ...Nc6 allowing the knight to be pinned by Bb5, losing control of e5. Speaking of which, the closest Fischer came to playing this kind of system was the five games he played 1.b3, then Nf3 and Ne5 much later, and only then following up with f4. He beat Mecking among other strong players with this system "Larsen's Opening" - or, as Nimzovitch played it, 1.Nf3 first, followed by b3, Bb2 etc.

Playable game scores in this posting
Playable game #1
Playable game #2

I exclusively play the Birds opening... In my last OTB tournament I won all three games as white with it vs losing all three with black :) The big part of it is that very few people are prepared for it.

The most common reply is d5. I set up engine matches with Rybka vs various engines and it has won 61/69 games (still going through games) with time control @ 90+30"/40+15"+30" under Fritz 10. This is a better win % than it has using either the Sicilian defense or the Kings Indian (the two other openings I use). I was particularly impressed how Fritz 10 was beaten.

I have been consistently told that the birds opening is unsound by many tournament players... but my computer analysis tells a different story. My favorite tournament game was 1.f4 f5 2. e4!? (how about a reverse froms!) g6?? 3.exf5 gxf5 4.Qh5# :)

As for the Froms Gambit try 1.f4 e5 2.fxe5 d6. Nf3!? just refuse the second pawn and white has gained a nice advantage... I have never met one player who was prepared for someone to refuse the other pawn.

Good one. This fledgling may try opening with f4 for a change from my usual e4 against my fellow fledglings. I may lose a few games but it should be fun.
