Mixed sport could be interesting. Male female seperation leave inconsistencies.

Used to get beaten by a female youngster(teenager) regularly on Thursday chess nights at the Nelson chess club.

However chess as with most sports is winning and learning and not winning and losing. Mark not Tam.

There is nothing that disgusts me more than a woman beaten by a man for any reason. Tao

In sport there are generally separate male and female categories purely because of the difference in physiology. Whilst I am not saying there are not some very physically strong woman out there who could put your average guy to shame. At top level, a male training to the same standards will always have an overall physical advantage to make equal competition near possible.

Equestrian is one exception that springs to mind and I have no doubt there are others. But largely it is just the size and strength factor.

As chess is a game and the physical aspect does not really come into it. I see no reason why women and men should not compete on equal terms at the same level. The only deciding factor on if men would continue in general to dominate such an event would likely be the ratio of male to female participants at that standard.

Mental capacity between genders is arguably no different. How information is processed on the other hand is often debated. Women generally suffer more anxiety in tests for example because of differing emotional responses to pressure. Again this does mean they are less capable, but simply less interested in certain things. Logically based on the numbers across all levels of chess you would have to assume this is the only reason male players tend to far out number the female ones.

If she wins the world championship I think it should be called the Open World Chess Championship and either the Women's championship should cease or there should also be a Men's and Women's Championship too.

Thoughts?

I agree, However one has to assume the press attention will hopefully compensate her for honesty over her true feelings.

Mature or not, she got a "big bang" out of her method of expressing herself. I was watching the tournament live and it caused quite a shock. It took a lot of gumption not to mention a willingness to give up several thousand dollars in prize money ! javascript:emoticon('')

It wasn't a very mature way to handle things, was it?

I was curious about that since 7 out of 9 is definitely unexpected (Hou Yifan, the top female chess player, resigned after move 6 of her tenth game after playing intentionally ridiculous moves). However, according to "The Guardian":

********
Hou’s action led to a fierce online debate where some argued that the pairings must have been tweaked for her to be paired with so many other women in an event where most competitors were male. The Gibraltar pairings have since been checked by a number of independent officials watching online. All have reported that the pairings were correct and in full accordance with International Chess Federation (Fide) rules.
********

So, it seems it was just bad luck that she was paired with so many women. There were a lot of women at that tournament. She should have discussed the pairing rules with the TD before doing this.

My question is why she didn't just play Fool's mate ? But, come on TD's, 7 out of 9 rounds being female opponents? Yifan paid her entry fee..NOT to play another females only event !!!! She was DENIED the opportunity to play vs. top men players..
