[Quote from: "Comte de MonteCristo"]...I am considering video annotations of one of the entire world championship matches for example Karpov vs Kasparov 1985 ...

Personally I would be hesitant in doing this. Some games will be quite dull draws. When I have gone over Kasparov tournaments - I covered only his wins in the Tilburg 1989 tournament, and it was quite enjoyable. I skipped all the draws. That's just my preference though - I like a decisive game result.

Highlights of the match in question between Kasparov and Karpov in 1985

Take for example Game 3

Mark Weeks writes:

"Game 3 - Queen's Gambit Declined
The game followed game 27 of the previous match, where Karpov played White. Kasparov varied from Karpov's continuation with his 7th move. After Karpov gained a slight advantage, Kasparov forced a simplification. The game was drawn after 20 moves, at Kasparov's proposal.
"
...

Thank you for the comments. I had already seen Mark Weeks' commentary on the match (Kasparov-Karpov 1985), which you quote. In particular, he is one commentator in question: on game 1 of the 1985 match on move 20 with White (Kasparov) to play we have this position

Analyse position

Mark Weeks writes that "Kasparov slipped on his 20th move" which is 20.Nxe8 capturing the knight. I do not know what move Weeks has in mind at move 20. I think 90% of chess players would play 20. Nxc8 capturing the bishop for a knight on the general principle that bishops are better than knights in relatively open endgames. Nevertheless, I have come to the conclusion that 20. Nxc8 only achieves equality and that Kasparov's surprising 20. Nxe8 wins the game and is exactly the right move!

Other comments from other players on this position would be interesting.

Kind regards

Mark Weeks is very open to suggests and feedback on his commentaries. He is also a strong correspondence chess player and OTB player. He is the writer for chess.about.com and on that site I have had some dialogue with other World championship commentaries with him on the General chess discussion forum there. If you get a login there, the General chess discussion is at:-

http://forums.about.com/n/pfx/forum.aspx?folderId=2&listMode=13&nav=messages&webtag=ab-chess

BTW: I think modern engine technology and hardware such as Rybka with powerful computers, is making it easy and quicker to blast through older analysis generally.

But I am not sure this would be of any interest to other players and the work required for this would be considerable. One difficulty is that some of the games are long and would require more than one video of 10 minutes; another problem is that the games are often very subtle and other commentators (not on this site) have made incorrect comments on the play. What are the opinions of other players on this project of a series of annotations of a WCh match?

Kind regards

Perhaps it would be boring to annotate this game.

But if you like completeness then its your choice to try and do each and every game.

hi comte,
i didn't realise this, my apologies. you see i've been having issues searching these videos, i'm kind of a computer dummy & i don't surf youtube. i'll have to see if i can find your videos.

as for your karpov vs kasparov project, to lighten the load i suggest this:
*while this is a great match up, surely you could skip some?
*as per long/subtle games, try to maybe just cover key positions.
*some of these games may be worth 2 videos

in the end it's your time & effort, i think there's many people(not limited to this site) that enjoy & learn from these videos. also, lately i have been reviewing your regular annotations. very instructive.
regards, areich

This is a game that is perfect for a video annotation:
* It was played by strong players.
* It's not too long, so it can be covered in a 10 minutes video.
* The Yugoslav attack is a variation that I'm studying at the moment.

Many thanks areich!
I will read the annotation in "The Mammoth Book..." one of this days and do a video soon.

If there is a certain game that you would like to see commented in a video you can post your request here.

I saw on another forum thread this request:

I'm concentrating on the Sicilian Dragon Variation myself. Maybe some of the other video annotators would like to do this one.
