Variation
A series of moves based on, but differing from, the main line of a game. For example, say a game went:- 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 etc Now when the game is annotated, a "variation" could be 3.c3 instead of what occured in the game which was 3.d4
